LEGO Technic Tractor 851 / 952 Speed Build with Instructions
This set was released in Europe in 1977 as under the “Technical series”, and was known as the Tractor set 852. It was then released in the US in 1978 under the “Expert Builder series” as the Farm Tractor set 952. It has 318 components and was for LEGO builders 9 years +. The model without the rear implements measures 20L x 12.5W x 11H (cm) or 8L x 5W x 4.25H (inches). It has three technical functions: rack and pinion steering, a lever raises and lowers the rear implements, and a power transmission from the rear wheels makes the implements rotate.
The LEGO description from 1978 reads “LEGO Tractor 851: Tractors have to do many jobs and this model from Technical set 851 reflects that. You can build a variety of farm implements – ploughs, harrows, hay turners and make them rotate by connecting them to the back axle. The tractor has a realistic steering system too. When you want a combine harvester or even a steam roller instead of a tractor, well that’s no problem for an ingenious model builder”.
If you like this video, please check out my other LEGO videos (Model Set Reviews, Speed Builds, and Restoring LEGO Sets). My aim is to show how these sets work, from the basics through to complex multi-shift gearboxes found on the latest car models. I will be focusing on the LEGO vintage sets first and then working my way up to the latest Porsche and Bugatti models; charting how these sets have evolved and continue to capture our imagination.

I had this model and the forklift (model 850) when I was 9 years old. Good memories…
My childhood, many thanks for this
Thank you very much for this video. I have just helped my daughters build the lego Heartlake City Friendship bus and delighted to see their enthusiasm and how lego fires imagination and creativity. This made me reminisce about this 851 tractor based on a Massey 135 or 165 and what a great model it was with the PTO, steering and "hydraulics". Fantastic! Happy days
i had this set nearly 43 years ago, i built it that many times i didn't even need the instructions in the end.
